Biogas and Biomethane: Connecting a Biogas Plant to the Power Grid 🌍🔌

Introduction

Connecting a biogas plant to the power grid is a crucial stage of the investment, enabling the produced electricity to be fed into the general network. This process involves several important steps, from obtaining connection conditions to signing a connection agreement and finally distributing the electricity.

Connection Conditions 🔗

The connection conditions to the power grid are a document issued by the distribution system operator (DSO) or transmission system operator (TSO). This document specifies the technical details for connecting the biogas plant and obligates the operator to enter into a connection agreement. These conditions reserve a place in the network for the biogas project for a period of 24 months, giving the investor time to implement the project.

Application Process 📝

To obtain the connection conditions, an application must be submitted, which should include:

  • Identification of the applicant and their address.

  • Content of the request, including details about the location and technology of the biogas plant.

  • Specification of the installed capacity and the planned annual energy production.

  • Technical information regarding the network parameters and biogas plant equipment.

This process may require additional documents, such as location maps, technical data of the equipment, and detailed investment plans.

Preferences for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) 🌱

Installations of renewable energy sources (RES), including biogas plants, have privileged access to the power grid. Operators are obligated to prioritize connection agreements with RES. Connection fees are reduced to half of the actual costs incurred by the operator, significantly lowering investment costs for green energy investors.

Costs and Deadlines 💰⏳

The cost of issuing connection conditions is 30 PLN per kW of connection capacity, but not more than 3,000,000 PLN. The connection conditions are valid for 2 years, giving investors time to complete the project. The first delivery of energy from the biogas plant should occur no later than 48 months after signing the connection agreement, ensuring the timely launch of the installation.

Fundamentals of the Connection Agreement 📜

The connection agreement is made between the distribution or transmission system operator and the investor. It constitutes a commitment to carry out the connection works in accordance with the conditions specified in the issued connection conditions. Both parties agree to undertake the necessary actions to connect the generating source to the distribution network.

Key Elements of the Agreement 🔍

  1. Works of the Operator and the Investor:

  • The Operator is obliged to reconstruct the local network of transmission devices and other technical equipment to enable the intake of energy from the biogas plant.

  • The Investor must construct the generating source and the power connection.

2. Privileging Renewable Energy Installations:

  • Installations of renewable energy sources (RES), including biogas plants, are privileged in accessing the grid. Operators are required to enter into a connection agreement with RES installations, provided there are technical and economic conditions for it.

  • Connection fees for RES installations are reduced to half of the actual costs incurred by the operator.

3. Agreement Completion Deadline:

  • The deadline for the initial delivery of energy from the connected source should not exceed 48 months.

4. Securing the Connection Route:

  • A key element of the agreement is specifying the connection point to the grid. If this point is outside the investor's plot, the investor is responsible for building the section of the power connection linking the biogas plant to the grid.

  • It is necessary to obtain legal titles to properties lying along the connection route, which may include establishing transmission easements on private properties or obtaining the necessary approvals for properties that are public roads.

Benefits of Connecting a Biogas Plant 🌿

Connecting a biogas plant to the power grid brings numerous ecological and economic benefits:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions reduction: Biogas plants utilize organic waste to produce energy, thereby reducing methane and CO2 emissions.

  • Sustainable development: They support a closed-loop economy by processing waste and generating energy.

  • Local energy source: Biogas plants can supply energy to local grids, reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels.

  • Support for agriculture: Farmers can utilize biogas plants for the disposal of agricultural waste and production of biomethane.

Summary

Connecting a biogas plant to the power grid is a complex process but crucial for the success of investments in renewable energy sources (RES). Ensuring appropriate conditions and connection agreements guarantees the safe and efficient introduction of energy into the overall grid, supporting the sustainable development of the energy sector. As a result, biogas plants can become significant contributors to the green energy transition.
